Talk is cheap! Google offers free voice calls via Gmail (tech, news, report, VOIP, voice, calls, telephone)

Google is taking on internet telephone companies like Skype by allowing users to call from its free web-based email service.
The service allows users to make calls to land lines and mobiles from inside their Gmail account.
Phoning anywhere in the US and Canada will be free until the end of the year, while calls to the UK, France, China and Germany will cost 2 cents a minute.
Until now Google offered computer-to-computer voice and video chat services.
"This is a real big deal because now hundreds of millions of Gmail users can make phone calls right from their Gmail page," Craig Walker, product manager for real-time communications told BBC News.
"They don't need to download an additional application or anything to start making really high-quality low-cost calls. For the user it means much more efficient and low-cost communications."
The product will initially be rolled out in the US, the firm said. However, for a brief time, international users were also able to use the feature because of an error.
"Unintentionally we briefly made the service available to non-US English users," a spokesperson said. "We do hope to bring it to our international users soon"
When it rolls out the product link will appear on the left hand of the Gmail page within the "chat" window. A "call phone" option will pop up along with a number pad to let you dial the number of the person you want to talk to.
Google said money raised from international calls will pay for the free US and Canadian calls.
"What surprised me was that they actually said they hope to make money off the calls," said Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of technology blog SearchEngineLand.
"Normally Google is like 'We don't know how we are going to make the money' or 'We will make money down the way, don't worry about it' and this stands out as a big benefit that they get actual revenue early on."
Competition
Skype, which is the most successful internet phone offering, claims to have over 560 million registered users. The firm said 124 million used the service at least one a month while 8.1 million were paying customers.

The company is planning to offer shares to the public later this year. Observers said that it is too early to say whether companies like Skype should be worried.

"Skype is a well known company in this place and they are almost like a verb in the internet calling world in the way Google is with search. You Skype someone. So I think there is some inertia there to get over and I am interested to see how Gmail users respond," said Tom Krazit, senior writer with technology news site CNET.com.

"But you always have to worry when Google comes after what you do. They don't do things half way and bring a lot of resources to any problem they try to tackle. It doesn't mean you are doomed.
"Google's product won't work on your mobile browser so Skype has an advantage there but I don't think it is a stretch to assume Google will come out with a mobile version pretty soon," said Mr Krazit.
The company plans an eye catching way to get non-Gmail users to give the product a go. It is in negotiations with a number of university campuses and airports to install red telephone boxes around the country to give users the chance to dial and try.

Fat-fingered sumo wrestlers given iPads

Fat-fingered sumo wrestlers, unable to tap the keys on a standard mobile phone, are being given iPads to help improve communication.
The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) said it would distribute 60 iPads among all of the sport's 51 training stables.
The announcement comes as the JSA outlined measures to deal with a series of recent scandals.
The ancient sport has recently been rocked by allegations of an illegal gambling ring.
Wrestlers have been accused of betting on baseball games, which is illegal in Japan and is often associated with organised criminal gangs.
The sport's authorities were criticised for their clumsy efforts to investigate the scandals, in part due poor communication between sumo leaders.
The iPads are intended to speed up communication between JSA officials, wrestlers and coaches, who have until now relied on telephone or fax.
"We will hand out the newest iPads to all the sumo stables to swiftly communicate what we need to," JSA vice chairman Hiroyoshi Murayama said.

E-mail also has the added advantage of leaving a paper trail for investigators.
Many Japanese newspapers also reported that the iPad had been chosen because of its large touch-screen keys that can be easily prodded by the giant wrestlers.
"When they try to send e-mail on mobile phones or PCs they often end up pressing two or three keys at once," said the daily Nikkan Sports.

Smallest frog in Asia discovered in Borneo (new, mammal, strange, science, news, report)

Researchers on an expedition in Borneo have found a new and very tiny species of frog.
Male adults of the new species, namedMicrohyla nepenthicola, grow to approximately one centimetre in length.
The researchers first discovered the diminutive red and orange amphibian on an expedition to Kubah National Park in 2004.
They have now described the discovery in the journal Zootaxa.
The team found the frog when it emerged from a small pitcher plant,Nepenthes ampullaria, in which it lives.
The plant lives off decomposing organic matter that collects in its deep pitcher-shaped cavity. The little frog uses this as a habitat.
It lays its eggs there and when the tadpoles hatch, they live in the gathered organic goo until they mature.
Apart from its size, the amphibian has some unique features that set it apart from other species.
The scientists believe that its miniaturisation and "reduced webbing" may be the result of it having to navigate the slippery zone of the pitcher plants on which it depends.
Scientists Indraneil Das from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and Alexander Haas from the University of Hamburg in Germany, discovered and described the species, which they named after the plant.

Abby iPhone repair appeared on NZ Top Classified site, Auckland, New Zealand (jailbreak, unlock)

White surfing the net, I found that Abby Technology Limited was listed at NZ Top Classified site. It contains information about mobile phone repair, UK phone network unlock.  It also cater for Apple iPhone 3G, 3GS jailbreak, iPhone 4 network unlocking.  Other than that, it stated that mail order type of repair customers are welcome (e.g. RIM BlackBerry PDA, Google Android Phones)

Actual site:

Abby Technology iPhone Unlock and Repair located in a US link

Some dude had hijacked my advertising to use on their own classified listing in the US! There is not much useful information on that site regarding mobile phone repair, network unlocking.  They do not even mention if they replace cracked LCD or digiizer for Apple iPhone 3G, 3GS or Apple iPhone 4.  On top of that, there is no specific information on jailbreaking, upgrade Apple iPhone software to iOS or iPhone 4.

Weird Miniature Versions of Normal Animals: Principality of Hutt River

Size: 75 Km2
Population: Around 20 residents and 13,000-18,000 overseas citizens
Ruler: His Royal Highness Prince Leonard I
The Principality of Hutt River (formerly Hutt River Province) was founded by Leonard Casley in 1970. The micronation was formed when the five families owning farms in the Hutt River area became involved in a legal dispute with the government of Western Australia over wheat farming quotas. Essentially, the families had produced an amount of wheat that greatly exceeded what they were told they could legally sell under a newlaw (1,000 times the allowed amount, in the case of Casley himself). In correspondence with the Governor, Casley was addressed as “The Administrator of the Hutt River Province”, legally entitling him to that title. He changed his title to “His Royal Highness Prince Leonard I” to take advantage of an old law stating that anyone interfering with a royal could be held for treason, and used this to justify seceding from Australia. In 1976, Australia Post stopped handling mail for the micronation, and repeated demands were made that the residents of Hutt River Province pay Australian taxes. Casley declared war on Australia as a result, and the mail began to run again (and the tax notices stopped coming.)

Weird Almost Nations: Republic of Molossia (Strange, places, earth, country, geography, boundary)

Size: 58 km2
Population: 2-3
Ruler: President Kevin Baugh
Molossia is headquartered just outside of Dayton, Nevada, and consists of President Kevin Baugh’s home, back and front yards, and two properties he purchased in Pennsylvania and California. He styles himself after a dictator, right down to the military uniform and big sunglasses, and his micronation has been described as “a hobby taken to the nth degree.” He also claims a spot in the Pacific Ocean and 49,881 square miles on Venus. Molossia pays taxes to the United States, but officially labels this as “foreign aid”. A variety of bizarre things are banned in Molossia, including: guns, walruses, catfish, onions (and onion-like vegetables), and anything from Texas except pop star Kelly Clarkson.

Weird Almost Nations: Principality of Sealand (strange, places, country, nation, geographical)

Size: 0.00055 km2
Population: 27 (2002 estimate)
Ruler: Michael Bates
Sealand is probably the world’s most well known micronation, and this is probably because the stories behind it are bizarre and truly intriguing. The site of Sealand is about 10 km off the coast of England, and was originally a World War II sea fort designed to deter German air raids. In 1967, Paddy Roy Bates occupied the sea fort (then called Knock John) and used it to run an off-shore pirate radio station. He and his family have claimed it as an independent sovereign nation, including issuing passports. Bates claimed that the nation was granted de facto statehood when Germany sent a diplomat there, and a 1968 UK court ruling stated that because of its location in international waters, it is outside of British jurisdiction. This is connected to what is perhaps the most fascinating event in Sealand’s history, which took place in 1978. While Bates was away, Alexander Achenbach, who refers to himself as the Prime Minister of Sealand, along with several German and Dutch compatriots, staged an armed takeover of the facility. They held Bates’s son, Michael, hostage for several days, later releasing him in the Netherlands. Bates enlisted armed help to aid him in recapturing Sealand, and raided it from helicopters. He held Achenbach and the others as prisoners of war, and while the others were released, Achenbach was not. Since he held a Sealand passport, he was charged with treason against the micronation and was held unless he paid a hefty fine. When the British government would not help, Germany sent a diplomat to negotiate his release. From time to time, rather extreme things like this have happened at Sealand, including an instance in 1990 in which a British ship was fired upon with rifles from Sealand for passing too close and “invading Sealand territory”. It was notably in the news once more in 2007, when torrenting gurus The Pirate Bay attempted to buy it in reaction to harsher copyright restrictions in Sweden, its homebase.

Weird Miniature Versions of Normal Animals: Kitti’s Hog Nosed Bat

Also called the Bumblebee bat, they are tiny bats from Thailand that reach no more than 1.3 inches. They are one of the world’s very few animals with a spine that is in danger of being taken out by a flyswatter, but apparently habitat encroachment is what is doing them in, although I would not have been even a little bit surprised to find out “Bigger bats” made the list of things that kill them.

They have so much head and ear fur that their eyes are barely visible, and although they usually only cluster in groups of 10-15, they can sometimes form swarms of up to 500, which is actually quite a bit more terrifying than a mosquito swarm. Fortunately, they are insectivores, so no one is in danger of being drained by a swarming mass of tiny vampires.

Weird Miniature Versions of Normal Animals: Brazilian Golden Frog

I have seen small frogs before, but in every case they were barely more than pollywogs without a tail. That thing in the picture is a full grown adult. Wikipedia makes the distinction that this is the smallest frog in the Southern Hemisphere, the smallest frog in the Northern Hemisphere being Eleutherodactylus Iberia, which I couldn’t find any pictures of. The adults of the northern frog top out at 8.5 mm while the Brazilian Golden reaches a “massive” 9.8 mm.
On the plus side, they are a brightly colored frog from South America that isn’t covered in neurotoxin, like poison arrow frogs but it does make them tiny, crunchy food for practically anything that eats meat. They are also endangered, but listed on the IUCN rating system as “Least Concern”, so there are no “save the tiny Brazilian Frog” funds.

Weird Miniature Versions of Normal Animals: African Pygmy Mouse

African (sigh)Pygmy mice are surprisingly awesome little creatures. They are like some sort of real-world version of a fantasy creature. Get this; they stack pebbles in front of their little mouse burrows at night. Overnight, the pebbles collect dew, which the tiny mouse then runs up and drinks first thing in the morning, before running back to their tiny dens to presumably slumber once more with fairies to the songs of dryads and pixies.

They also have a “unique” arrangement of their chromosomes that leads to the occasional XY chromosome mouse being female. So they are part fairy, part alien and part mouse. Tiny, 1 to 3 inch mouse.

Weird Miniature Versions of Normal Animals: Pygmy Marmoset

Taxonomy clearly does not have a prize for originality. What could have been easily called a “Tiny finger-monkey” instead was just called “pygmy” like every other tiny animal. Their bodies (minus tail) grows to be only 6 inches long, and they are apparently fast as hell, so studying them in the wild is pretty much impossible. That said, apparently they can live to be 10-12 in the wild, although I have no idea how they determine that (maybe they just ask?)

Pygmy Marmosets have a complex set of communications open to them; vocal chemical and physical. They whistle when there is danger, and I am assuming they do a mean Charleston when excited. They are omnivores, eat fruit, bugs and even hunting down tiny reptiles (imagine tiny tan Na’vi) but spend most of their time boring tiny monkey holes in trees and drinking their sap, like a miniature primate vampire.

Google is Changing Your TV: Coming Soon to a Phone Near You (tech, news, report)

Google TV is an open source operating system built on Google Android that will basically bring the web to your TV.

Google TV is an open source operating system built on Google Android that will basically bring the web to your TV.

Google TV will bring Google search and Google Chrome to your TV, built in to Sony TV’s, and as well as available to vendors to build into Blu-Ray players, and stand alone boxes. For launch, it will be available for Sony TV’s and Logitech boxes it seems (Google will open source the code in the Summer 2011).

Google TV will bring a ton of content to your site, just like many of the other set top boxes available out there now, the difference though, is the name recognition Google brings.
For example, Google TV will bring Google Chrome to your browser, so you will be able to browse the internet natively on your 50” TV. It will also bring Youtube, Google Listen – which lets you subscribe to audio and video podcasts and stream them right to your TV, and it will bring third party content too, potentially Hulu (it was on a screen capture during the event, nothing official was announced).

This could potentially change how TV is viewed on the… TV. Google will bring a ton of new content to the living room with Google TV that hasn’t previously been there.

I love watching Hulu on my big screen, but lugging my laptop over to it, plugging it in, getting the resolution setup, making sure the audio is working, and all that jazz is just to much work when it comes to just wanting to watch a TV show for 20 minutes.

The one thing that doesn’t excite me about Google TV is that it will not be out now. We are going to have to wait until the fall to just see the first devices, and I fear, like Android was on cellphones, it is going to take even longer for more companies to come out with their products after Google open sources the code next summer.

This device features a lot more features than it’s competitors in the Apple TV and other devices. With Google’s web properties and Chrome browser, I can see this being a hot item for nerds (no offense, I will be getting one too) this winter season.
Google TV will be available this fall from Best Buy stores nationwide.

iPad Tips and Tricks: 10 more essential tips and tricks for your iPad

I’m sure you’ve already been playing constantly with your new iPad since you got it. Here on iPad.net we have already given you 10 essential tips and tricks to get more from your iPad… There are loads of more great things you can do to personalize your tablet, so here is our second list of 10 more tips and tricks… http://tiny.cc/ipad-10tips

1.    Use your iPad as an HD video player on your TV
It’s easy to hook up your iPad to your HD TV. You will need a couple of bits of extra kit: the Apple iPad dock to VGA connector. You then connect this to the VGA port on your TV and the 30 pin port on the iPad. So now you can watch streaming video in HD directly from your iPad onto your TV. Great.

2.    Set your own sound levels

Go to ‘Settings’ then ‘iPad’ then ‘EQ’ to choose the style of the music you usually listen to. This will set the EQ levels automatically to make the audio output more palatable.
3.    Changing your email signature
Go to ‘Settings’ then ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’. Go to the text box and change the default to anything you wish. Much better than the cheesy, “sent from my iPad”.

4.    Use your iPad as a picture frame

This is really easy. To shuffle your photos in slideshow mode: Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Picture Frame’. Switch the ‘Shuffle’ button to the ‘on’ position and you’re all set.

5.    Download podcasts

With a couple of adjustments you can download podcasts directly to your iPad. Find the podcasts you want from iTunes then choose ‘Free’. For some reason, you need to set this up by using your PC or Mac to sync with your iPad. Is that an oversight by Apple?

6.    Take an iPad screenshot

This is really easy. Press ‘Home’ and then the ‘Power’ button. Your iPad will automatically save your image in your photo lirary. From there you can edit and send like any other image.

7.    Overheat

So far there have been no reports of the iPad actually overheating. Having said that, it can get really warm if it’s sat on your lap. Rest it on a magazine or a tray to keep your legs from scorching.

8.    Smudge Alert

If you’re not using a screen protector, you’ll need an antistatic cloth to get rid of the inevitable smudges you’re going to get on your shiny new screen.

9.    Speed up your Facebook

Facebook upload is a bit slow on iPad. To speed up a reload, just give your iPad a shake.

10.     Charging

Recharging using the USB can be painfully slow or nonexistent. Best to recharge overnight using the wall socket.

iPad Tips and Tricks: iOS 4 Tips and Tricks (Abby Technology - iPhone Repair, Auckland)

The iPad seems to have taken the world by storm.  It’s no wonder that new iOS upgrades are highly anticipated.  Upgrades usually deliver better, sassier and new great features. Make sure then that you too are prepared for the newest introduction and are not left amongst the technologically deprived.

To learn more about iOS 4 and the many new features, we’ve compiled a few tips and tricks that will help. Even those using the version in their iPhones need to take help because new additions have completely changed the face of iOS 4 and it is especially tough to keep a track of the minor additions and changes introduced.

Here are a few of the many tips and tricks:
Unified Contacts Listing
iOS 4 is invested with a wonderful edge above than the earlier iOS version. This is actually a contacts app that unifies all contact details and flashes them on the “All Contacts” page as a properly compiled list. This is a wonderful deviation from the earlier versions which had a tendency to display the names of certain contacts several times over if they were being connected to independently on either Mobile Me accounts or corporate mail accounts.
Using this would enable easier access to information about any contact as all of it would appear on a single page. The option to link and unlink contact cards is also available.

VoiceOver Option for iBooks

iPad iOS 4 version would take a leap forth and even enable iPad owners to turn the iBooks that they otherwise read on their iPad screens into audio books. So they do not have to strain their eyes over the iPad screen any longer and can instead opt for listening to their passages being read out to them.
This end can be achieved by enabling the VoiceOver function through the following path:
Settings- General- Accessibility-Enable VoiceOver Post that, the book to be read can be launched and the selected text can be heard aloud through the application. Settings can as well be tuned to automatically turn pages and even for auto stop!
